Narrative analysis of socio-cultural experiences affecting unconventional sexual attitudes and behaviors

Background and Purpose: Individuals with unconventional sexual orientations are faced with various sociocultural and contextual factors and challenges. The aim of this study was to investigate the narrative analysis of the experiences of sociocultural factors affecting unconventional sexual attitudes and behaviors.
Method: The method of this qualitative study was narrative analysis. The statistical population included all adolescents and young people with unconventional sexual orientations in Alborz province in 2024 and 2025. The sample included 16 individuals from the target population who were selected purposefully based on the theoretical saturation rule. The instruments of the present study included semi-structured and semi-in-depth interviews. Data analysis was performed by manually categorizing similar semantic units, extracting main themes, and subthemes.
Results: The results of the narrative analysis in this study showed that socio-cultural and contextual factors play a decisive role in the formation of unconventional sexual attitudes and behaviors. The findings were categorized into three main themes: problems and challenges related to school and academic affairs, gender stereotypes, and factors that underline and worsen the socio-cultural status of individuals, and nine subthemes.
Conclusion: Using the narrative analysis method, this study explains how cultural norms, gender roles, and social contexts play a role in giving meaning to the “non-traditional” nature of sexual behaviors. The findings show that cultural, social, and contextual factors are finding components in the formation of attitudes and the emergence of behavioral problems in these individuals. |
