Predicting parental burnout based on extreme parental attitudes mediated by parental stress in mothers

Background and Purpose: Maternal burnout is one of the significant challenges in the field of family mental health, which can have negative consequences for both the mother and the child. The aim of this study was to predict parental burnout based on parents’ extreme attitudes, with parental stress as a mediating variable, among mothers of elementary school children.
Method: The present study was descriptive-correlational and employed structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of all mothers with children aged 6 to 12 years living in the city of Kazerun during the 2023–2024 academic year, whose children were studying in public and private schools. The required sample for this study was 310 participants who were selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the most recently validated version of the Intensive Parenting Attitudes Questionnaire (IPAQ; Liss et al., 2013), the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF; Abidin, 1995), and the Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA; Roskam et al., 2018) in Iran. To examine the research hypotheses, structural equation modeling with the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach was uwed. Data analyses were conducted using Smart PLS software version 3.
Results: The results showed that parents’ extreme attitudes had an indirect effect on parental burnout through the mediation role of parental stress (β= 0.218, P≤ 0.001), showing the significance of the indirect path. In other words, the findings showed that intensive parenting attitudes indirectly contribute to increased maternal burnout through the elevation of parenting stress.
Conclusion: The findings of the study indicate that mothers who hold more intensive beliefs about their parenting role are more likely to experience parenting pressures and stresses, and these tensions ultimately lead to feelings of fatigue, burnout, internal conflict, and emotional distancing from their children. |
